A Sister’s Earliest Memory

Tulip
Photograph by Ben Gelernter

by Carla Schwartz

I remember at two
the bundle
Mommy carried
in her arms
made a barrier
between Mommy
and me
eclipsing
her face,
my sun—
the light
that shined on only me,
until that day,
at two,
when I felt
the darkness,
wallowed
in the shadow
of my sister,
became
a distant moon.
