In Memory of Sara Miller

Sara Miller
May 29, 1943 – September 30, 2023

Sara Miller was a warm, supportive, and longtime member of the Smoky Quartz team. She was an insightful reader of prose and poetry and had a deep appreciation for artwork as well. Her wise voice brought clarity to our editorial decisions—helping us all reach consensus. She had a keen eye for identifying written work that could shine with revisions. We especially remember editorial meetings at Sara’s home with “special appearances” by her two beautiful Maine Coon cats.

Sara also served as President on the Board of Directors for the Monadnock Writers’ Group with her good humor and kindness. She had a talent for recruiting people to carry out projects and led the group through the COVID years.

A former Children’s Librarian at the NY Public Library, Sara served on the selection committee for the Caldecott Medal. She also chaired the Newbery Award Committee and the Notable Children’s Books Committee for several years. When she retired to New Hampshire, Sara participated in Kate Gleason’s writing group for over a decade—writing middle-grade fiction.

Sara is deeply missed by the Smoky Quartz team and the Monadnock Writers’ Group.
