Fall 2023 Issue
Instead of taking the reader by the hand and running him down the hill, I
want to lead him into a house of many rooms, and leave him alone in each of them.– Mary Oliver, American Poet, 1935-2019
The Smoky Quartz Fall 2023 issue is a house of many rooms for you to explore—from changing seasons to the nighttime sky, humble insects, lost minds, and local landscapes. Through a wide variety of poetry, prose, and art, you will discover your own memories, feelings, and reactions.
The current issue of Smoky Quartz includes twenty-two poems, two short stories, and nineteen pieces of art, plus a featured artwork section on collage. Many of the writers and artists are those you have enjoyed in earlier issues including Michael Keshigian, Denise Ginzler, Maura MacNeil, Eric Pinder, Barabara Danser, and Amber Rose Crowtree. They are joined by a number of writers and artists appearing in Smoky Quartz for the first time.
The Editors thank the many talented people who submitted a total of over 270 pieces of writing and art for consideration. We are grateful for having had the opportunity to read and view their high-quality works. Deciding which pieces to include was difficult. In the end we had to pass on many excellent submissions.
We encourage everyone to submit work to future issues of Smoky Quartz. Follow this News page to receive announcements and submission deadlines for upcoming 2024 issues.
