Ode to the College Pub

by Jody Wells

In the basement of Sanborn Hall
on Rush Road in Henniker
I worked as a bartender
at the college pub.

Every afternoon I was swamped.
Happy Hour – Two for the Price of One.
Peanut shells covered the dusty floor
smells of cigarette smoke and stale beer.

Every now and then I came out
from behind the bar to sweep up the mess.
Most afternoons there was a couple
sitting in the back booth.

She wore a long granny dress
and sat on his lap while they drank their beers,
smiling at me like I didn’t know
what was going on.
