August Body

Maura MacNeil

for BES

After your death murmurations flew wild across my tongue—

I blared your death through hollowed bones.
I beat your grave with sticks and stones.

I stuffed my mouth with fallen leaves
to silence away the longest notes.

Will you come back to me?

Will you come back to me?

Will you come back to me?
