Three One-Sentence Elegies for my Sister, Patricia Jane Walker

by Catherine O’Brian

1

During Hurricane Katrina, my sister
in the Hospice bed on St. Charles
refused to take off her high black lace-up boots.

2

My sister on morphine, invited me
to share her Hospice bed, only one chair
in the tiny room with a cross on the wall.

3

My sister, so beautiful when she laughed
even the old pilot on the flight to Zambia fell in love.
