Re-twining

by Carlene M. Gadapee

Who is this man who sits at the table?
What do we talk about? The tick
of the clock is loud, but never louder
than when children move out. Years
of being parents but not always partners
make it hard to untangle and re-twine
our lives. It’s a careful negotiation:
untended growth needs to be retrained,
tied up, and given space to reach.
Our roots run deep.
